School Supplies

I was at my folks' house this past weekend for a few days. It's a different feeling when I'm back at the farm. Rubes and Teo love being able to run, run, run. Teo was doing his "super boy" run every time we stepped outside. (Arms out to his sides, pretending to fly.) We always take our dog ,Fry, with us and she does the wild wiener run with all her relatives. Imagine if you will, 7 miniature dachshunds running as fast as they can in the front lawn chasing each other. Cracks me up every time. While there my sister, Aurora, and I went to Target for school supplies. Rubes starts Pre-K this fall. The list arrived a month ago with all the necessary items. Rubes is super excited. She tells everyone she sees that she's going to school. As soon as the school section comes into view she starts running and yells with unbridled joy, "Mom, they have backpacks!!!" Aurora goes with her to narrow down the search while I collect the 8 small glue sticks that are on the list among other things. I like to think that I'm not an overly emotional person, at least not out in public while shopping, but when I saw her put on a backpack I got a little choked up. (The bag was half the size of her!) My little peanut was beaming and so proud and it hit me.....she's going to school. Next year she'll spend more time with her teacher and class than me.
We finished getting all the things we needed and headed back to the farm for more running and playing. Fall is coming too fast this year for this mom.

Woe is me at the Library.

The day started off well and thankfully ended that way. However, the middle contained a "Meltdown". Notice the capital M. We had to go to the library. Returning books and dropping off caterpillars. (The later being 2 monarch caterpillars for the bug themed summer. ) Anyway, we found new books, played with puzzles and blocks and it was nearing lunchtime. At the checkout counter it starts. Rubes, who is 4, pulls out the step stool, I put it back but Teo has already seen it. I'm slightly annoyed at Rubes because I'd asked her not to drag that stool out as we approached. Teo gets all rubber legged and whinny. He's 2 and it's almost nap time. I comment that it's going to be nap time for both of them. Rubes then starts bawling about hating naps. I calmly state that if she wasn't acting like this she wouldn't need one. Her volume only increases as we exit the building. Teo is still whining and now mad because I won't let him run in the parking lot. Rubes cranks it up another notch to red faced and shrieking.
I've remained smiling this whole time but now I'm irked. I get both crying kids in the car. Teo stops, realizing we're heading home. Rubes continues in her bawling protest. I proceed to use my 'stern angry mommy' voice to tell Rubes her behavior is unacceptable plus, she will most definitely be napping when we get home and if she's smart she had better not talk to me till I tell her she can.
I like to think I'm a fairly patient, tolerant mom. Rubes has only done this sort of thing 2 maybe 3 times before. I know hunger and being tired played a role in her behavior. Something about the speed of this tantrum totally thew me today. These are the days I know my child is her own person. I'm also fully aware that I will love her unconditionally even when I may not like her. It was tough. She took a hour and a half nap with her brother. Refreshed we continued our day in better spirits.

The First of Many... Expect the Unexpected?

Computers are not really my thing. I'm more of a hands on type of person. I can birth a calf, replace a toilet, and bake well, among other things. Technology has me a bit baffled but I'm trying. The average 5 year old could probably out maneuver me around around my own blog. That being said I'm up for new adventures and challenges. Plus odd things seem to happen to me, "signs" if you will. If I don't share them then I could very well go crazier and most are pretty funny. I'm hoping that this blog will bring about some new friends, new ideas, and help me figure out my own computer! I'm preparing to expect the unexpected.
