Mama’s Holiday Wish List Meme

TodaysMama and Provo Craft are giving away a sleighful of gifts this holiday season and to enter I’m sharing this meme with you.

*Casual watch for work.
*New coffee pot.
*Gloves for driving.
*Gift Card to the local coffee shop.
*Sterling silver earrings.

2. What is your favorite handmade gift you have received? My Grandmother used to make stuffed animals without using any patterns. My all time favorite is a dark brown little mouse... after a few years of love he needed a tail replacement. I still have him!

3. What handmade gift have you always wanted to tackle? A wooden toy box.

4. What was the best Christmas gift you received as a child? Grandma always made each of us a dozen cookies of our choosing. Grandma would say, " You don't have to share... but it would be nice."

5. What items are on your kid’s wish list this year? Rubes has asked for a mermaid barbie... so her Ariel has someone to swim with. Mateo wants walkie talkies or a flash light.

6. What is your favorite holiday food? Chocolate covered peanuts or pecan turtles!

7. What will you be hand-crafting for the holidays? Stuffed wiener dogs, a few ruffle skirts, a little car carrier roll and some necklaces. That's all I can recall... I think there's more on a list somewhere.

8. What is your favorite holiday movie? Classic Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer

9. Favorite holiday song? O' Holy Night

10. Favorite holiday pastime? Decorating the tree! Quite a bit of story telling is involved with each ornament.

Christmas Concert Dress

Rubes has her first Christmas Concert next week so a "new" outfit was in order for the special event. Here's what I came up with... at a cost of maybe 50 cents for thread. The red top came from my niece, Lauren. The white ruffles were from a thrift shop skirt refashion left over. The print fabric came from my late grandmother stash, once upon a time a shirt. Oh, I took the elastic for the waist band from a pair of lounge pants.

Had to dress-up the sweater with a lil' pin!

Rubes loves ruffles these days and I finally feel like I've got the hang of making them.

I'm very pleased with the way this all came together and how quickly as well. I'm thinking a few ruffly skirt may show up under the tree.

I'm a busy gal these days with the holiday crafting but thought I'd share some goodness that's in my life right now. A few wonders I didn't have to make. We'll start with "Maisy"... a happy miniature wiener dog. Here's a typical view of her in my lap. Ah, the love.

I've got two nephews in the past two months. Ben here has the cutest "chubbies" and is a real snuggler. Holding him is wonderfully sweet.

Next up is lil' Eli at only 2weeks old, he's already a charmer. So bright eyed when he's awake! (His shirt says "Gobble till you Waddle".)

These were taken at Thanksgiving with my family at the farm. (Thus the turkey on a stick!) I'm truly blessed.

Stuffing, Stuffing, Stuffing.

I bet you were thinking food! Well, I will be making a few pies for Thanksgiving but as of right now I'm stuffing wiener dogs, cats and dinos! A bit of a jump start on some handmade Christmas gifts.
Wiener Dog Striped3
A striped wiener for Rubes.
Wiener Teal Velvet 4
A soft teal wiener for Teo.
Wiener Dog Red2
A red fleece wiener for Conrad.
Weiner Dog Zig Zag6
A wacky zig-zag wiener for my nephew lil' Ben. (His big brother, Will, received his last year... the first one I made!)
Wool Cat Black 2
I gave this wool cat to a friend for her recent birthday. I put some goodies in the little side zipper pocket.
Dino Orange Flannel 1
A dino for Teo. He named him "Ned" from his favorite PBS show Dinosaur Train.
And when do I make all these you ask? In the evening with my new wiener dog "Maisy" curled up in my lap of course.

The creative process intrigues and inspires me. I've always enjoyed the "process" of creating something. The guts of a project. Anyway, I'm loving this song... thinking I may ask for this CD for the holidays. (Hard to believe it's right around the corner!)

I was given an award from my friend Jen about a week ago. I'm trying real hard to follow the rules. See, she's a great person/friend and responsible for this blog's recent upgrade! However, I am horrible at passing things along, forwarding emails and chain letters of any kind. Besides I stalk blogs. In Blog Land my friends are rather limited. Sad but true. Carrying on...

Here's the rules: I need to pass this award on to five people, post on their blog to let them know I left them this award, and then I need to answer a list of questions (to follow) using just ONE word.

I'm in awe. Absolutely beautiful. I wonder how much time it took to create and the amount of practice before performing? Wow.

Ramminator Power 4x4 System On

I often forget that my camera has video capabilities. Teo had dance fever the other day and I caught the following. Not the best but you'll get the gist of my lil' boy's enthusiasm and love for his truck. I hate too say it but, the dance moves may come from me. O.K, I know they do. My siblings all say... think "Elaine" from Seinfeld. Ha ha. (I'm a tad better than that, right?)
Anyway... "See those moves?" Yes, I did and I love them!

Apple-Cranberry Crumble

I snagged this recipe from the Martha Stewart Living October 2009 issue at my daughter's Dentist's waiting room. It was in the section of the magazine where all the recipes are printed on 1/4 of the page with perforated edges. It wanted me to take it home... I'm guilty of petty crime, yes. And now I'm a bit of an addict having made this 5 times in 3 weeks. (I've eaten it for breakfast more than once!)

Apple-Cranberry Crumble
1 1/2 lbs. apples (3 medium sized) -I use McIntosh.
1/2 cup fresh or frozen (unthawed) cranberries, coarsely chopped
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Coarse salt
4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) cold butter/ cut into small pieces, plus more for the dish
1/2 cup pecan halves (2 ounces) coarsely chopped
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 cup old-fashioned rolled oats (not quick-cooking)
3 tablespoons packed light-brown sugar

1. Preheat oven to 425. Quarter apples lenghtwise, then thinly slice. Toss in a large bowl with cranberries, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and a pinch of salt until evenly coated.

2. Butter an 8-inch square glass or ceramic baking dish. Mix pecans, flour, oats, brown sugar, and a pinch of salt in a bowl until combined. Work in butter with your fingertips until topping is crumbly, with pea-size chunks.

3. Spread apple mixture in prepared dish; sprinkle with topping. Bake until filling is bubbling and topping is golden brown, 25 to 30 minutes. Let cool slightly before serving.

A Haircut And Speechless

So I had a moment as I perused a friends blog and noticed it's been 5 weeks since my last post! Ah Hem... I've been trying to find a balance between work, school, and life. The blog fits in somewhere and apparently I'm a blog slacker. I've been making a few costumes, recycling some clothing, prepping the house for winter and trying to socialize. In a fit of craziness to simplify, I even gave myself a haircut. More on that aways down the post.
Well, here goes. This little girl of mine... I like think to I've some idea what's going on in that little head of hers but when she opens her mouth chances are I'll be left a bit speechless.Part 1. A few weeks ago she came home with this picture in her backpack. I love the drawing and what she had her teacher write. (I love living with my Mommy. She's cool!) I got a little teary. I don't see Rubes a whole lot between school for her and work for me. And then I couldn't help but laugh cause it reads like I'm a single parent. Which would be fine if that were truly the case =:)

Part 2. Now a week ago I decided to give myself a haircut. I went and cut off 13inches of hair to donate to Locks Of Love. The next morning the following conversation took place.
Rubes: "You cut your hair."
Me: "Yep, it's pretty short."
Rubes: Giggles and tilts head, "You look like Daddy."
Me: Stunned into silence.
Rubes: Giggles again and tilts head to other side, "I have two Daddies in my house."
Me: Smiling, "First off, it's not very nice to call me Daddy. Secondly, girls can have short hair.
And finally, I do have boobies."
Both of us burst into giggles and that's that. I have to say I do hope she didn't go around school with the two daddies bit. Because once again it's simply not the case. First the single mom and then two dads...geez. Teo never said one word or look or anything about the hair. I'm thinking I could be blue and he'd carry on as if I'd always been blue.
This is naughtiness personified.
We're looking forward to Halloween!

Breaking Even...

I'm someone who keeps the balance. Bad things balanced by good things. Sad balanced by happy. Lows balanced by highs. I break even. This past month has been quite the time.

1. My dog died balanced by my younger brother's girlfriend coming to stay with us till December. (Some may find the comparison odd but it's the low vs. high scenario.)

2. Washing machine needed $200's worth of repairs. Turns out it didn't need a new boot seal so only $75's to fix. Yeah! Then the balance... the furnace got it's annual check-up for a total of $122.38 on the same day. Yeah?

3. Replaced a well loved thrift store that needed to go (yes, it's the one in the banner pic) with a like new hide-a-bed couch that previous owners were simply going to toss!

4. Rubes started all day kindergarten. A little sad... she spends more time with her teacher now than me. Balanced by spending one on one time with Teo, which makes me happy. His giggles make my day.

5. Needed to return to my fall job, which was very rewarding and very draining on so many emotional levels. Then I was offered a job that could utilize my creativity and artistic skills. Balance and a bonus!

There's more but really the above should be enough to prove my point... I break even. I'd like to get ahead one of these days. Maybe it's a state of mind. I've always thought of the glass as half full. Whats the catch to finish filling it up?

Nothing Like a Good Parade

Nothing like a good parade.... especially when you know a few people in it! Like say your older sister.... and your youngest sister ! I'm so lucky to have them in my family!

Too much fun!

My Kindergartner

My Rubes is now a Kindergartner. All day, five days a week in school. Her teacher is spending more time with her than I am now. I know she's ready and loves it but I'm a little sad. I do get to spend more alone time with Teo and he's quite the little hooligan! See the love. This past week has been interesting to say the least.
Rubes even rides the bus both ways. I'm thankful that there's a nice group of slightly older neighborhood children who look out for her. She was so excited that first day, I didn't shed a tear.
Kindergarten... where did the time go?

Wonderful White

Stopped by the local thrift store a few weeks ago. I hadn't been in for a few months, I'm not buying much in the way of clothing these days. I simply don't want to spend more than a few cents on anything when I can do a bag sale for $3. (Plus I'm refashioning what I have.) However as soon as I saw this skirt I had to have it! For $2.50 I knew I'd be saving about $25.00 once I turned it into a dress for Rubes. So off came the bottom ruffle and the lace trim on the waist. I love my seam ripping tool. Then I took out the zipper and seam that ran the lenght of the skirt from there. Took off about 6 inches round the waist and sewed it back together. A little bit of elastic and some gathering in the back.

Made 2 ties from the removed fabric and attached them to the top to create a halter top neckline. Reattached the lace from the waist also to the neckline. Tah Dah! A wonderful white summer dress!
Perfect for twirling. I wonder how long it will stay white?
* Teo kept trying to poke the "princess" with a stick during this photo shoot!

The 11th Commandment?

I didn't have my camera with me on that trip to the grocery store so you'll just have to take my word for it. There was a sign in the front yard of this house that read....

The 11th commandment "Thou shall not steal other peoples pink flamingos!"

I kid you not, who knew there were elven? I'll have to ask Father Jim.

August Already?

We've been enjoying smore's. Can you tell? August is here already and I'm wondering where the time has gone.So it takes me a while between posts at times because I'm collecting photos and not down loading them. A few weeks ago I learned a few blogging tricks from a great friend, that I've yet to utilize. Summer is a busy time. The "loose" schedule is hard to maintain and I'm exhausted by the evening. The blog suffers. I'm hoping to use flickr once I figure out the down loading thing. I'd better wait for the hubby since it involves the computer and I'd hate to erase anything important. (Seriously, that could very well happen.) I'm more confident with hands on things... I know how to replace a toilet. So I'm willing to be patient and wait for some assistance with this stuff. Speaking of hands on, here's a f picture of my hands after the local library tie dye day that I assisted with. My gloves ripped and by that time there were no more replacements so....150 t-shirts were colored with no tears or anger so it was a very successful 2 1/2 hours of fun! Time to go berry picking so I'm off till later....

Beauty Is In The Eye Of The Beholder

Lately when I'm taking pictures of things, Rubes will ask to use the camera when I'm done. I love these pics. It's an eye opener to see what she wants to capture on camera. Self portrait.
Art work in progress.
Derby, most beloved of stuffed animals.
Noble steed.
A few Barbie princess friends. I love the simplicity of her shots. And the angles. I can't help but notice some picture taking characteristics from her great-grandma Markow coming through.

Monarch Central

On route to our favorite walk spot we pass some milk weed plants. As soon as they come up in the spring we begin our search for "stripies". More commonly known as monarch caterpillars. We've had lots of success this summer...we have 4 at home now. Ours were all half this size when we found them and are now in the chrysalis stage. It's quite incredible when you can watch the daily transformation from egg to caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly and all in only 4 weeks or so.
I love the serious face this little boy of mine has when he's checking out his "bugs".
And my Rubes wants to pet them.
We've another week till it's butterfly time. We can hardly wait!

First there was Hulu.

And then I found Bleach on Hulu, commercial free.

As of this moment I've only 18 episodes left.

I shall be sad till Hulu aquires more of my "new" favorite show.

Yes, I know I have a "dork" side to my personality.

I embraced it a long time ago.

I love you, Kurosaki Ichigo!

Making & Baking

Why is it I always think "I'll have more time once summer gets here..." Right. I'm more occupied than ever. Well, I'm still whipping up the occasional creative item. Here's a dress from a t-shirt I altered for Rubes. My sis Cherish bought it for herself only to find out it was a junior medium not adult. I liked it but found out the sleeves were different sizes and the larger was the better fit. So with some nips, a little sewing, and a few buttons Rubes got a comfy dress. Pony riding at Grandma's house. What fun they had. Rubes was a bit timid though happy. Teo was fearless and a bit of a heart attack since he'd run up to all the horses in his excitement. He's in high gear these days.

Gave Rubes an "Art Journal" this past week. I made it back when I was working as a "Crafty" at a summer camp. I've been holding on to it for over 6 years. It's full of tie-dye colored paper, with lots of room to add other drawing and stuff. She was thrilled and did her happy giggle.

And speaking of tie-dye...I was practicing this past week for an up coming event I volunteered to lead. The library is doing a tie-dye, play at the beach, picnic day and I'm offering up my help. It's good to know a few things that your really good at doing. I'm good at sweeping, making waffles and tie-dying. When it comes to the later, I'm a spiral master. I've lots of experience and some mad skills. I hadn't done any in 5 or 6 years so I needed to practice, 20 shirts later I can honestly say I've still got the touch. Oh, Teo's pants were made from one of the hubby's old t-shirts and then dyed. They crack me up!

And lastly, Teo is now 3. Hard to believe but true. Time has been flying. I try to do something special cake wise for his Birthday since it's so close to the 4 of July. He's always going to be lacking in friends in town or too many tourists. So I found this idea originally on the Cake Wrecks site around Father's Day but then headed to Bakerella for the instructions and such. They were really easy. Cupcakes (buns) with brownie (hamburger) centers and sugar cookies (fries). The adults were awed and kids loved eating them. Success!
And finally I'm taking a "leave of absence" from my night job. I'm not super woman after all. I thought it would be easy to pull an all nighter once a week but with the kids and other work I never really recover the sleep. Sleep is necessary for the making and baking of things. May there be more of both in my future.

Iris Love.

Iris. Probably my favorite flower. I received bulbs from two friends last fall. Yellow and purple was what I recall. Below is what came up! Still my heart...gorgeous. These little beauties were only 2 by 2 inches. These wonderful monsters were closer to 4 or 5 inches. I've seen the yellow bearded before but never these blue/purple striped ones. Whoa.
At one point there were 3 blooming on the same stem. I'm still in awe.

The only downside is they never last very long. A few days tops and then they're gone. I've the chance to attain some cranberry wine colored ones for next year. The thought makes me giddy. Iris love, I've got it bad.

No Sparkles Please.

It starts with Easter, if the weather is warm enough. By summer no Saturday is safe. Glitter. The pews have these shiny dusting spots that can only be described as "fairy explosions" here, there, and everywhere. Now I have no real issues with the glitter itself or that brides seem to deem it necessary for their bridesmaids to sparkle, however, it's a pain to clean up. That stuff wants to go anywhere but into the vacuum. The trouble is timing. See, on Saturdays the weddings happen, then there are 5 masses before I get the chance to clean-up. Older gentlemen don't seem to like glitter on there bums much. Nor do people at funeral services. (Which sometimes happen on Mondays.) So, I firmly believe it would be a good thing if people followed my second commandment of the church cleaner.

Commandment #2
Thou should NOT wear any type of "glitter" in the church for any reason. Spare the gentlemen, pixies, and pews.

On My Mind.

Lots on the brain these days. Thankfully I've finished the "present" for this Friday's birthday. I'm thrilled with the results! There'll be pics soon. I've been cleaning out closets for a garage sale down at my sis Summer's place this week. We'll be staying with Grandma & Grandpa so the kids are way excited. However that means I'm cleaning the church before we go and yikes where's the time. Oh, I've noticed toenails when I was vacuuming today. Bleh, summer is here. I also noticed quite a few glitter spots and that means summer weddings. Bleh. (Another post.) And when I worked my recent over night with the Old People I got to thinking how much I've been working and how much I'd rather be sewing or creating things in general. I need to combine the two. I had one of those "Duh" moments then, where the light bulb goes off. I was almost a double major in college with theatre to accompany my art. I received "A's" in costume design. Geez, how'd I forget that. Then yesterday, Sunday, I woke with a headache and puke all over Rube's bed. I also had the joy of a whinny boy who needed to poop. Bleh. On the upside there's some strawberry picking in the next week or so with a good friend and her boys. I also made rhubarb muffins this morning. Yum. My wonderful neighbor gave me the rhubarb. So I'm feeling a bit more optimistic about today.

Keeping Me Up At Night

It keeps me up at night. Nightmares, no. Little boy, no. Pregnant, whoa, no. It's the idea I have for a costume for Rube's friends birthday present. Seriously. I wake up to use the facilities and then I can't get the "idea" out of my head. I should probably just go work on it but I keep thinking sleep would be a good idea instead. I'm averaging an hour of awake time during the night over the past three or so days. Geez. Anyway, I've taken the before pics and am starting the sewing today. I'm really excited. Think "woodland fairy or princess". Soft rose pinks, sage greens, and various shades of browns. A breezy dress with matching cape. Through in a little gold leaf stenciling and ,poof, the idea. It keeps me up at night.

Busy, Busy, Busy

The past few weeks have been "BUSY"! Here's a brief listing....
-Planned food for a Mops picnic.
-Finished up full weeks with the Old People and am now on 1 evening a week.
-Made 30 necklace pendants for a fundraiser.
-Have a new Tiny Serger by Singer that my sis Aurora got at a garage sale!
-Planted rhubarb, pumpkins, zucchini, cucumbers, beans and lettuce.
-Made a "Banging or Noise Wall".
-Got poison ivy from my dog on my right hand and managed to get rid of it!
-Bought fabric paint on clearance, yeah, and am trying freezer paper stenciling.
-Made a schedule of parks to play at every Tuesday during summer.
-Visited Grandma's house.Teo, Grandma, and Rubes going to water some of the horses.
Rubes lovin' one of Auntie Aurora's 9 Flemish Giant bunnies. Too cute.
Teo driving a tractor. The hubby calls this "the day Uncle Whitney became a god".
Myself and Rubes. Some part of her is always posing!
Teo claims we're frozen in this photo. Apparently when you freeze your tongue hangs out. Though the weather here is still a bit cool for this time of year I'm into summer with it's busy -as -a -bee -ness.
