Rubes was invited to another Birthday Party recently and thus we needed a gift. This little friend loves dressing up and according to her mother she'd live in costume if she could. So, I decided a "Princess Dress" was in order. After a bit of digging I found the following items in my stash o' stuff. Lots of lace bits and ribbon, a cream ladies long slip, olive green skirt, and some pink fabric my Mom gave me that she had intended to use for an Advent banner at church 15 years ago.
There is no pattern. Rubes has some Princess dresses that I looked over to see their basic construction but mostly I cut, sewed and adjusted as I went. It wasn't always pretty.
A lot happened by
accident. Try it, change it, try it again. See, I doubled up the cream fabric because it was slightly see through.
The pink band in the middle was added once I realized the dress was going to be too short for my liking. The green portion of the sleeves was taken off the bottom layer of the skirt since I wanted some green on the top for balance.
Most of the cream ribbon was added to hide the plain sewing lines. Thus I pieced this together little by little. Cut, lay it out, sew it on, take it off, recut or set it aside, try a different piece, etc. Over and over. Not as vexing as it may sound. I enjoy the "process of creating " this way.
The best part was when Rubes saw it finished and said, "It's the dress Sleeping Beauty wears when she lives in the woods!" That and when the Birthday Girl unwrapped it she jumped up and ran out of the room to go put it on right away!
